Frequently Asked Questions

Will I see the magnet through my lens?

No. We put the magnet in your blind spot so it will not interfere with acuity. The magnet is the same size and distance as the nosepad arm; most people do not see the nosepad arm of the eyewear. Some will be aware of of this, the majority will adapt within 2-3 weeks.

How big are the magnets?

They are about 2 mm.

How long does it take?

It can take as little as half an hour in a local participating retailer. If you are ordering new eyeglasses through your optometrist, it will not add any extra time to your optical order. If your eyeglasses are already made, it may take a week to complete the modification including shipping to and from our central laboratory in Pennsylvania.

Can my glasses be damaged in this process?

As master craftsmen, we recognize and have a special appreciation for the high quality eyewear we process. Included in the price of the product is insurance of over nine-hundred dollars. If your order requires more than this, please contact us. We have never had to use this insurance.

How is this design different than prior magnetic clip designs?

This design takes into consideration the many flaws of the prior designs by an optician with 15 years of bench experience. Those flaws include: attachment finesse quotient, not available for any frame, no lens color choice, susceptibility to deformation, loss of attachment strength, lens shrinkage, gaps between front base curve of the RX and clip lens, glareflections between lens surfaces, magnets detaching or breaking off, and detracting the appearance and fashion of the eyewear.

So how were these problems approached?

As opticians we set out to make a Self-Aligning Design. Matching the curvature of the sunlens to the RX lens makes the lenses stack and layer and provide an encapsulated fit, something that is not possible with the mass-produced, older designs. A bridge, two lenses and four magnets combine in a 'Self Aligning Design.' Pure surgical titanium bridges are thin, light, and ultra-tough to resist deformation. Polarized, semi-rigid lenses act as shock absorbers to maintain magnet alignment. Interlocking magnets are permanently cast, - embedded - into both lenses. To make this technology feasible, we knew we couldn't risk damaging customer lenses, so robotics were introduced to eliminate spoilage. Both the product and the process represent the state-of-the-art.

Can I get this product from my optometrist?

Ask your eye doctor first. If no one in your area carries the product, you can have it made by our facility in Pennsylvania. If you prefer to work with your family optometrist, please refer him or her to our website or provide us their information so we can assist. We can also let you know, based on your Zip code, where the closest local providers are located.

How do I order or get more information about this new technology?

The retail price is 100 - 150 depending on the options. If you have a fax machine, you can call our toll free line, enter in your fax number, and we will automatically send you an order form. If you have web access, log in and purchase by creating a login and password. For information about selling, manufacturing, or marketing please email us dz@specticlips.com or call 888-321-3939.

Can you tell me more about the improvements upon older designs?

We have a very complex and detailed process, but the result is a very simple and minimal form. Base curve matching the lenses proves a giant leap as it keeps it more snugly attached and keeps light from getting in, two major complaints of prior designs. Prior designs include the popular "2nd frame front" - with metal eye-wires that encircle both lenses and are very heavy relative to the strength of the magnet. The metal-eye-wire design has wings or appendages that stick out at right angles to planes of the lens, which are prone to misalignment, and both of these elements remove the style of the frame. The smallest combination of these two problems results in an unusable clip. More specifically, we have taken the concept of a magnetic clip out of the foreign factories where they are mass produced, and introduced the production into the US, where clip is tailored to the frame and the optical prescription lenses. The process is similar to making a finished pair of rimless spectacles.

I work in an optical, how do we start selling these in our store?
